Deptford: the craft beer heaven south of the river

For any beer newbie, going into a craft beer shop or bar can be an intimidating experience.

The hipsters and their turned up beanies, the seemingly endless selection of brightly coloured bottles and cans, all apparently different from each other, whilst you’re there just trying to work out what IPA means (It stands for India Pale Ale by the way) .

If you can relate and feel like its time for an un-pretentious craft beer experience, then look no further than Deptford, in south-east London.

It’s got all the variety of micro-brewery hotspots like Dalston, Hackney and Shoreditch, but with a much more down-to-earth feel.

Whether you’re into a nice cold beer and rustic pizza or fancy doing some shopping to add to your home collection of ales, Deptford really does have it all.

The first place to try on the list is SALT, just a short walk from Deptford station and home to delicious wood-fired pizzas and beers all from their home brewery in Saltaire in West Yorkshire.

The staff are super friendly and very happy to recommend a beer based on the brands that you already like. The inside has a very trendy converted warehouse vibe to it, with plenty of space, as well as tables outside for warmer days.

Next, a little bit further from the station is Little Faith, a taproom hiding in the ubercool development of Artworks Creekside.

Serving beer from their very own Little Faith Brewery as well as a selection of Indian fusion street food, this is the perfect weekend hangout spot. Definitely try the Vicky’s Pet Unicorn NEIPA if your looking for something really different.

Another well known haunt for Deptford locals, tucked under the arches of Resolution Way is The Villages Brewery/Taproom.

It boasts a large selection of beer on tap starting at £2 for a half pint and often hosts music nights and art shows showcasing local talent.

If you feel like picking up a beer to take with you for a picnic in the park this Summer, then Hop Burns & Black is your place.

Located in the vibrant Deptford Market Yard, this shop is home to the best of the best of craft beer, as well as selling premium hot sauce and a curated selection of vinyl records, it is a must visit when in Deptford.
